Accelerated Reader Program

(also known as AR)

The accelerated reader program is designed to promote reading comprehension and the love of reading in students. Students choose books that are in their instructional reading range—books that are not too hard or too easy. Students may choose booksthat are fiction or nonfiction that interest them.
After reading, students are able to take comprehension quizzes on the computer about the book they have read. This is a great check of understanding and comprehension of the stories, as well as great practice for standardized test questions. Studies show that adding accountability to free choice reading makes it much more effective.

MY BOOK!

I did it!
I did it!
Come and look
At what I’ve done!
I read a book!
When someone wrote it
Long ago
For me to read,
How did he know
That this was the book
I’d take from the shelf
And lie on the floor
And read by myself?
I really read it!
Just like that!
Word by word,
From first to last!
I’m sleeping with
This book in bed,
This first FIRST book
I’ve ever read!

Battle of the Books is COMING!!!

Battle of the Books

Battle of the Books is a competition for 4th and 5th graders designed to foster the love of reading. Students form teams of three, and together answer questions about five novels they have read. The questions in the first phase all start with the wording, “In which book . . .?” Teams get points for saying the correct title and author’s name. In the second round, teams answer open-ended questions about details from one of the books.
Three teams are chosen to represent our school at the district final battle against the other elementary schools in our district. Read on, go Four Peaks Roadrunners!

Four Peaks Semi-Final 1:00 Wednesday, October 29th.
District Final @ PAC November 12, 2008. Contestants need to arrive at 6:30 to prepare for the battle which starts promptly at 7:00.
