Accelerated Reader Program
(also known as AR)
The accelerated reader program is designed to promote reading comprehension
and the love of reading in students. Students choose books that are in their
instructional reading range—books that are not too hard or too easy. Students
may choose booksthat are fiction or nonfiction that interest them.
After reading, students are able to take comprehension quizzes on the computer
about the book they have read. This is a great check of understanding and comprehension
of the stories, as well as great practice for standardized test questions. Studies
show that adding accountability to free choice reading makes it much more effective.

for 4th and 5th graders designed to foster the love of reading. Students
form teams of three, and together answer questions about five novels

wording, “In which book . . .?” Teams get points for saying
the correct title and author’s name. In the second round, teams
answer open-ended questions about details from one of the books. Four Peaks Semi-Final 1:00 Wednesday,
