Classroom Procedures

Discipline

In second grade the students are involved in the "Make Your Day" program. The philosophy of this program is that the student will "Do what is expected and do it the best they can, and they do not have the right to interfere with the learning, safety or well-being of others". If the student follows these rules then they will make their day.
"Flip the Card"
We all make choices that may not follow the school rules once in a while. I have a system of flipping cards using a green light, yellow light, and red light method. Every child will start out the day with a green light. After a warning has been given the child might be asked to "flip" their card if the behavior persists, resulting in a yellow light showing. From there they might move to a red light which the student will be asked to stop and go to another room for some “Think Time.” If the behavior continues the child will flip to a blue, in the case they hit a blue card, they will not make their day and a note will come home for you to sign. (This letter must be signed and returned the next day or the child will have to serve lunch detention. If two notes go home in a week, they will stay after school with me for detention.) If the behavior is still continuing through the day after the child has received a blue, then the child will flip again to a brown and will result in a detention. If the child’s behavior becomes severe, the student will flip the card to an orange and be sent to the office with a referral. On the other hand, your child may flip their card to purple which is an important part of this plan to reward good behavior. Some possible rewards are praise, stickers, Roadrunners Awards, and/or Star Jar names.
The Make Your Day philosophy stresses that each student has choices to make throughout the day and that it is their responsibility to make correct choices on their own!

Weekly Practice
Weekly Practice is what we will be calling their weekly homework. We want the review and reading that they do at home to be viewed as important “practice” and not as “work”. Their Weekly Practice is important, because it reinforces the skills taught at school, which increases retention. It also develops a sense of responsibility.
All work must be completed neatly and written in pencil. The Weekly Practice Folder with all the pages from the week is due on or before the following Thursday to receive a sticker. An “I” will be given for an incomplete and an “L” will be given for late work. (Homework is still due, even if it is late.) Student who have completed all of their weekly practice are invited to attend the Reward Friday activity. Students who earn all nine stickers for the quarter will be invited to a homework celebration! Weekly practice must be completed in order for your child to receive credit. The book report, reading log must be signed by a parent or guardian, and the math activity must be completed or your child will not be able to attend the Reward Friday activity.

Reward Friday
Reward Friday is a behavioral management program used by the second grade teachers to reinforce positive behavior, completion of classroom assignments, and the returning of completed homework by Friday. Every student who meets the criteria will be allowed to participate in art and creative craft activities.
Criteria for Reward Friday is as follows:
Behavior – The student has Made Their Day every day for the week.
Work – The student must have completed all classroom assignments for which they
were present that week.
Weekly Practice – The student must return completed homework done to the best of
their ability by Friday, including the reading homework sheet signed by a parent.
Consequences – Students who do not meet the above criteria will not be allowed to
participate in the weekly activities. These students will finsh incomplete classroom
assignments, incomplete homework, or will be given other activities to do during
the time period of Reward Friday. The students who do not meet the criteria will be
encouraged to do so the following week.
